Ask Dr. E – Top Ten Online Dating Tips

Are you stressed, overwhelmed, undecided or need direction?

Get your life, career, business, relationship and most pressing questions answered. Let Dr. E help you get moving in the direction of your dreams.

Dr. E, do you recommend online dating? I want to try it and I’ve heard some horror stories like people getting robbed or raped. I trust you, if you say I should try it; I will.  Please help me, Atlanta single.

Dear single, you are not alone. People are busy and many don’t spend a lot of time out trying to meet people. So they try it via the internet. Of course there are pros and cons to anything you want to do, however if your goal is to meet new people, meet people from all around the country or even have the opportunity to read about them before you choose to connect face to face, then you should give online dating a try.

According to the 2010 Chadwick Martin Bailey Study 1 out of every 5 singles in the United States dated someone they met online and online dating is the third most popular way for singles to meet, behind school/work and friend/family member. So you are not alone.

However, there are some basic things you should know before you put your profile online. In many cases you can post an online profile for free, while others you can use for fee. You can find online dating sites based on all kinds of criteria such as being single, Black, White, Christian, Jewish, Gay, Lesbian, etc. I suggest you do an internet search to find the site that is best for you.

Here are 10 steps to help you have a successful online dating experience.

  1. Take a current picture of yourself. I suggest a full length one. There’s nothing worse than being attracted to a picture only to find out the person looks nothing like that now.
  2. Write an honest profile that includes your likes, hobbies, personality, etc as well as what you are seeking in your date.
  3. Continue to live your life fully. Be available to date but don’t wait for a one to go to the movies, restaurant, play, etc. people like to meet other people who are excited about their own lives.
  4. Chat or message no more than three people at a time, this way you can really focus on someone you are truly interested in. If you want their attention, give them yours.
  5. Communicate with those that you are truly interested in speaking with you in person.
  6. Make a face to face date within a month of the initial contact (local matches). If they don’t want to meet, they might be looking for online fiends only, married or hiding something.
  7. Have the initial meeting in a public place ie coffee shop, library, restaurant, etc. Go to a place where you will feel comfortable. Trust your gut instincts. If it doesn’t feel right leave.
  8. Consciously show up at the face to face meeting, don’t send an imposter. That means, be yourself. You don’t want someone to start liking the fake you. Have confidence in yourself and be who you are. If it is not a match, then it’s ok. You can move on to the next person.
  9. Follow up with honesty. If you are not interested, thank them for the date and tell them you don’t think you are a match. They might also do the same, so don’t feel bad about if it happens.
  10. Don’t put pressure on yourself or your to be an instant love connection. Enjoy the journey, have fun and meet interesting people.

I have over 15 students and friends that met their spouse online. Good luck,

Dr. E

LOOK INSIDE THE BOOK

Introduction

Every day do one thing to move you in the direction of your

dreams. – Dr. Carolyn Edwards

You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will

be tomorrow where your thoughts take you. – James Allen

Over the past ten or so years I have received a multitude of inquiries from people wanting to know how I landed an online teaching job. It took so much time to answer each inquiry that I decided to write down not only my story but also the stories of others successfully teaching online. Although there is no particular secret, online teaching still eludes the vast majority of those who apply for such assignments. Many believe that they are not doing something right or that they don’t have access to the right information or people. This book presents ten simple steps to help you find online teaching opportunities; get your résumé noticed by recruiters and land the job. You learn not only how to teach online but also how to educate online, which opens up a great deal more opportunities. Just changing the word from “teaching” to “educating” will give you access to jobs in which you can facilitate, develop, and deliver educational content.

Information Awaits You

The information you need is already out there. If you put the energy and effort into making your dream of teaching online come true, you can indeed land such a job. However, there is a way to work smart, a way to get the inside track, a way to demonstrate your value to an organization. Be ready and willing to do the work. Invest in yourself, and don’t forget to do your homework.

The idea of teaching online is so much more than what you think and so much broader than what it was just a few years ago. The industry today encompasses a lot of opportunities not only to teach but also to educate. This means that you can teach, lecture, facilitate, coach, and develop curriculum while working online at home. To help you focus on the abundance of opportunities available, I will use a variety of words such as “educate,” “instruct,” “facilitate,” “develop,” and “teach online” throughout the book. These terms are used in the various job descriptions, and you need to cast your net wide to get the best results. That means you should look for not only online teaching jobs but also the plethora of jobs involving online education. I want you to you know that there are many opportunities to do what you love, and reading this book will help you to take advantage of them.

The Right Stuff

When you apply for a position, the goal should always be to demonstrate how you can help an organization to achieve its mission and goals. If I could give a single tip, it would be that when you apply for a job take the focus off you and shift it to how the organization can win by using you as an educator. Let me say it a different way. How can students succeed by having you as the instructor, designer, facilitator, or teacher? Answering this question will help you to develop a successful résumé and cover letter. Revising your application to address the requirements of the job takes a shift in thinking. When applying for a position, job seekers often think about their needs, wants, or desires, but those of the employer must be detailed in your application. Taking your ego out of the equation and focusing on the organization’s needs is the first step in becoming more effective at landing a job.

Many of you may be thinking, “It’s easy for her to say that there are jobs out there because she already has a doctorate,” but that is not quite the case. When I first started teaching, I didn’t have a Ph.D. or any experience as a college instructor, but what I did have was faith in my abilities to help students succeed. It doesn’t matter whether you have a Ph.D., Ed.D., J.D., or master’s degree. It doesn’t matter whether you have twenty years of experience or none at all. With that in mind, I nonetheless continue to get asked the same questions:

  1. Can you help me get an online job?
  2. I don’t know where to begin. Can you point me in the right direction?
  3. Can you review my résumé?

This book tells not only my story but also the stories of those successfully educating online and working from the comfort of home or anywhere in the world that has an Internet connection. You will read about those who didn’t have any teaching or online facilitation experience but who still were able to use common strategies such as networking and volunteering to land an online teaching job. It happens more often than you might think when you know where to look and have the necessary tools.

Are you stressed, overwhelmed, undecided or need direction?

Get your life, career, business, relationship and most pressing questions answered. Let Dr. E help you get moving in the direction of your dreams.

Dr. E, I need some dating advice. I am 45, been dating for the last few years but nothing has materialized into a relationship. I have been divorced for over ten years, worked on myself and finished my Master’s degree and doing well in my career. But I can’t seem to find the right man at the right time. A few friends recommended online dating but I don’t know where to start.  Please help, seeking a long-term relationship.

Dear Seeking,

Life is beautiful when you have a great friend and partner to share it with, however even when you don’t have a special relationship with another person, you can still be a great friend to yourself. Start by loving yourself, being happy in your life and surroundings. Go out and try new things. Take yourself to dinner, have a girls happy hour, take dance lessons, attend a lecture, go to the local coffee-house or library. The goal is to confidently enjoy your life because joy and success are contagious and attractive. People want to be around happy, confident people.

Make a list of all the attributes you want in a mate. Then make a list of all the attributes you bring to a relationship. Be realistic with your wants. If you want an attractive man who is in shape, healthy, wealthy, caring, respectful and has his own place, make sure you can say the same about you. Many times we have unrealistic expectations in a mate such as he has to be over six feet, with light brown eyes or drive a particular type of car.

Why not try online dating?  It can be the opportunity to meet all kinds of interesting people. Even if there is no love connection, it can boost your confidence in terms of communicating your wants and needs with others.

According to Online Dating Magazine, there are more than 280,000 marriages a year as a direct result of people meeting on an online dating service. There are free sites where you can look for online dates like Facebook and MySpace or others that charge for the service like eHarmony and Match.com. If you choose to put up an online dating profile be honest about who you are, what is great about you and what you are seeking in a date as well as the type of relationship you’re seeking. Include a recent photo and have fun searching through the profiles.

Good luck,

Dr. E

Teach Online – How to Land an Online Job without Online Experience

Looking to Make Money Teaching Online?

Get tips, tools, advice and resources to  get moving in the direction of your dreams.

Many want to know how to get their foot in the door and land an online job without prior online teaching experience. Have you taught in the classroom but have no success with getting the opportunity to teach online? Here’s a few ways to make yourself more marketable.

1. Create a “How To”  video in the area of your expertise and post it on YouTube. By using this format, you can demonstrate the use of technology as well as your knowledge on the subject. The video can be short and answer specific topics or longer and include a lecture video. You can add a link to the video on all of your online accounts as well as your resume.

2. Create a Screencast or Jing presentation and post it to your personal website or LinkedIn. This allows recruiters to see your expertise at creating a presentation that can help students master the topic.

3. Network. But don’t just sit around, go to where the people in the field are located. Attend conferences, seminars and presentations that will be attended by college Presidents, Deans, Recruiters and Administrative staff. When you introduce yourself, tell them your field of expertise and how you can help their students learn. Take lots of business cards and pass them out. Get theirs as well. Give them something to remember you by.

4. Follow up. Call the contacts you’ve made and ask if they have any openings or if you can send a resume just in case one becomes available. Every 3 or 4 months, touch base again so they remember you are still available.

5. Lastly, each week spend at least one hour either applying for an online job, communicating with a contact or mastering the skills that will demonstrate you can achieve and succeed the online teaching requirements.

Sometimes it takes longer than you want it to. I’ve had to wait a year for a few schools to actually call me with a job offer but in the mean time while you’re waiting don’t give up, take one action each day to move you towards your dream of teaching online.

Good luck and I’m here to help.
